Sri Amritsar Sahib – Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjeet) president Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh on Friday strongly asserted that political parties running on “remote control from Delhi” can never bring real welfare to Punjab.
Speaking to selected journalists here, Jathedar Harpreet Singh said Punjab today needs a strong regional party that can represent its voice without external pressure. “We are working to fill this gap of a truly powerful regional party,” he declared.
Criticising both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, he reminded that the Congress had inflicted deep wounds on the Sikh community while the BJP had failed to heal them. He alleged that Sikh institutions are being subjected to “BJP-isation,” and stressed that these bodies should be managed strictly in accordance with Gurmat traditions.
“Because of policies dictated from Delhi, Punjab has been reduced to poverty,” he said. Referring to the recent floods, he added, “The apathy shown by both the central and state governments during the floods made Punjabis realise who truly stands with them.”
Jathedar Harpreet Singh pledged that if his party comes to power, they will leave no stone unturned to strengthen Punjab economically. At the same time, he expressed concern over the state of youth, saying, “Today Punjab’s young generation is directionless. Instead of finding opportunities at home, they are being forced to seek their future abroad.”
Responding to a question, he promised to free the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) from political interference. “The Sikh Parliament must function independently to take decisions for the Chardi Kala of the Sikh faith,” he said.
Clarifying his personal role, Giani Harpreet Singh made it clear that he does not intend to become Chief Minister, Member of Parliament, or MLA. “My mission is to provide Punjab with clean and visionary leadership so that the state can climb new milestones of progress in the future,” he underlined.
Regarding the party’s agenda, he said a panel of intellectuals and scholars has been set up to draft the party’s constitution, policies, and programmes.
